Introduction
This month's theme looks at serendipity and synchronicity and their role in the creative process. There is a magic that happens during the creative process where ideas are born. You may recognize this magical place by how your heart feels - it can be described as a deep resonance much like the vibration of a tuning fork that has been struck. It is during these moments you'll likely hear me giggle or utter, "ahhh." I feel both a peacefulness and child like excitement when magic happens and I've noticed that it occurs with little effort - I often stumble into it and at other times feel guided by grace.
Serendipity is when we set out to do or look for something and find something quite different and unexpected. There is always an element of surprise. Synchronicity is when two or more events occur and we see connections between the events. These moments of serendipity and synchronicity are key opportunities for finding personal meaning and making deeper connections with our Selves and others - not to mention it's a good place to find your next creative idea. As we open up to these possibilities and opportunities the results are rewarding.
In this mega post, I'll share with you some stories of serendipity and synchronicity. I designed a fun project called, "The Serendipity Compass." You are welcome to make a compass of your own. To inspire you to take time for yourself to play, anyone who explores the theme will be entered into a drawing to win a True North Arts prize. Scroll down for more details.
As a special bonus the very talented Michelle Ward who's work you've likely seen in Artful Blogging, Art Journaling, and other Stampington publications joins us to share her experiences with serendipity and synchronicity.
New to True North Arts is my very own talented son who has just launched his own blog, Paper Ninja Arts. He is a paper artist and like his proud mom, loves to share his creative ideas. His first project is a Star Trek Communicator Badge. We think your young friends, kids, and grandkids will love the projects from the Paper Ninja. Intrigued? CLICK HERE to visit the Paper Ninja.
I hope you enjoy this post. I encourage you to savor it. Be sure to return throughout the month of June to read more stories of synchronicity and serendipity submitted for the contest.
May you find a little magic in every day.

Stories of Synchronicity and Serendipity
Do you find happy accidents and coincidences are a routine part of your life? When I set out to explore this topic I decided to invite serendipity and synchronicity into my life. Here are three of many, many things that happened in the last month.
A special scarf
I have a friend and colleague who has a fabulous collection of scarves. Each day she sports another one that makes a statement. I was thinking how I would like a scarf but didn't know where I would go to find one and I really wasn't sure if I wanted to spend the money right now. Two days later a package arrived in the mail from a friend of mine and tucked in it was the blue scarf pictured above. Lydia didn't know why but she felt compelled to send me this scarf. We have exchanged e-mails and she tells me there is more to the story. I'm dying to talk with her on the phone to get the details. Oooh a synchronicity suspense story.
Dreaming of dolphins
One night I had a very vivid dream involving dolphins. It was a puzzling and dramatic dream but I decided after a couple of days that the dolphins were there to help me. Usually when I dream the images are of people, places, and things that I have encountered sometime during the day. What struck me as odd was that there were no dolphin references in my daily life. It was a few days after my dream that I was compelled to pull a book off the shelf that I hadn't read in over a year. I opened it up to find tucked in it the bookmark pictured above. My son had experimented with painted papers and the background paper is a dictionary page. Can you see the word and picture of the dolphin? wow Wow WOW! You are probably wondering what the book was and what the passage was about. The book: "This Time I Dance! Creating the Work You Love" by Tami J. Kieves.
I opened to the following quote, "Choose gloriously. Seize your wild want, not that freeze-dried, politically correct, mild want." I took the bait and read on for several chapters. Here are a few more juicy nuggets. "I knew I stood in exactly the right place, where magic could find me." "So it's up to you how you see this time. You are either on the verge of an adventure that will lead to gleaming paths materializing beneath your feet, or you're lost and just too creaking old for this kind of precariousness and uncertainty. You can tingle with anticipation or anxiety." I don't know about you but I'm certainly not too creaking old and I choose the tingly feelings.
The stars are lining up
So by now I've had several experiences and I was having fun. One morning on my way to work I decided to pack some cereal to bring into the office. I ran out of time and knew that I would be useless if I didn't bring something to hold me over until lunchtime. I grabbed a bowl and napkin, filled a small jar with milk, and stuffed a plastic bag with cereal and raisins. In my quiet little office I set out the napkin and then the bowl and I noticed that both were blue and had stars on them. Playfully I said to myself, "Today's color is blue and today's shape is the star." Within an hour a co-worker came bouncing into my office and the first words blurting out were, "The stars are lining up!" I was stunned. She was so excited to share the many connections that were happening with a major project that we were working on. Without going into too many details, the connections involved people from three different organizations and two huge but different projects in-house. It was just as she said, "the stars are lining up" and there I sat in this mysterious web watching all around me the many connections. Web? or maybe a net? Recently I have been saying over and over, "Leap and the net will appear."
Meant to Be
If you are intrigued by stories of serendipity and synchronicity, check out the book, "Meant to Be - Miraculous True Stories to Inspire a Lifetime of Love" by Joyce and Barry Vissell. My blog friend Mother Henna has a story in the book that can be found on page 42.
Movie: Serendipity
Of course there is the fabulous movie, Serendipity starring John Cusack and Kate Beckinsale.
Artist Interview: Michelle Ward
I've shared several stories involving serendipity and synchronicity and you are probably thinking of several stories of your own. The question now is, "How can we work these stories into our creative process?" Artist and friend Michelle Ward came to mind as the perfect person to answer this question. Michelle is a dynamo. One stop at her blogs and Web sites and you'll see an artist who lives a magical life where serendipity and synchronicity are not only a part of her creative life but part of her everyday life.
What signs do you notice – what form so they take?
I notice signs all the time, sometimes more than once a day. They may come to me in audio or visual format. Most often I’ll see something, an image or a shape, that will trigger a thought and soon I will have made many connections from that visual to something that is significant to me. I’m not sure where this thought process came from. I’ve always done it. I think I am always looking for signs, symbols, and layers of meaning. Is it to make sense of the world and my surroundings or is it because I believe everything is connected? I’m not sure what the answer is, and don’t even care. It’s just how I’m wired. Being aware, being open, and being curious is the key to having an intuitive instrument through which all stimuli is filtered. Serendipitous connections are made when you are in tune with your own internal guidance structure.
How do you recognize a sign?
I’m not sure you always recognize a sign when you see one. When you feel attracted to something, you see something that peeks your interest, you should pay attention to that. It may be a sign. Some signs are obvious and some are subtle. You might not have the slightest idea of why you are drawn to an image or a pattern or a color combination that is new to you but eventually you will learn why it was placed in your path and the significance will be revealed or uncovered. The intuitive voice in your head, or your gut, should be respected and trusted. Someone once told me that ‘being inspired’ is to be ‘in the spirit’. You don’t have to think of that in religious terms, you can think of it as touching your soul, your inner spiritual guide, which assigns meaning and informs your choices.
How do you assign meaning to a sign?
Signs can have multiple meanings. Often I think I have figured out what something is supposed to mean, how something is meant to be connected, and then I shift my perspective and uncover a whole new set of definitions. My train of thought is sometimes linear, and sometimes abstract. Think of six degrees of separation….a sign may have several layers of meaning, or may have to be peeled back to get to the meaning - each layer having a special and significant and sentimental connection.
What is the connection between intuition and serendipity?
There is definitely a connection between intuition and serendipity in both life and the creative process. Having an inner voice that informs your choices and validates your instincts and impulses is intuition. Serendipity is a lucky discovery or sighting when you are least looking for it. Observing and respecting random occurrences or connections that we claim as serendipitous is allowing our intuition to do its thing. Making that connection, sensing the meaning, defining its personal significance, is intuition embracing serendipity. In terms of making art, it’s just knowing what works, what doesn’t, when something is finished, or when it is still missing something.
How do you play with your discoveries?
That is a two part answer because we are talking about signs AND serendipity. I look at each of these as individual entities, although often connected.
Signs: The obvious thing to do is make a journal page that documents the story line weaving the tale of the recognition of a sign, and it’s relationship to me. The clever thing to do is embed secrets in my work, whether a journal page or a piece of fine art. I take my signs and symbols and compose them into a piece that provides connection and meaning, even if it is only for me. While I like to work with layers of paint and paper, I also like to work with layers of meaning. Discovering my meaning is catching my wink.
Serendipity: The headline topic refers to serendipity and the role it plays in the art process and I think that is a totally different thing than discovering signs. When making art my approach may be planned or spontaneous, but there is ALWAYS room for serendipity and synchronicity. All best thought-out plans take a delightful and unexpected turn when something random happens, sometimes called a ‘happy accident’. Having no expectations of a certain outcome leaves me open to evolution, to serendipity. How does this manifest itself in real terms? Imagine this: you are sitting at your workspace and your self-imposed assignment is to make a paper collage and the pieces don’t seem to be coming together in a way that is pleasing to you. Suddenly you see a scrap of paper on the floor from a project you did two weeks ago and A-HA! That is just the thing you need! Or maybe you are gluing things down and an element misbehaves or moves and it is way better than your first composition. Or maybe you are in the zone, painting layers of color and you reach for the red brush but it bumps into the black on your palette and you don’t realize until it’s too late but the black turns out to be more interesting than red anyway – THAT is embracing serendipity.
Tell us a little bit about your GPP Crusades. Does serendipity play a role in developing the crusades?
The Crusades began as a way of using blog format to promote community building with artists. I present a monthly prompt and challenge artists to participate by sharing links to their own sites where they have made a blog entry interpreting the prompt. Each month we widen the circle of online friends while expanding our perspective on the specific theme. I try to invent ways of getting artists to think out of the box and to investigate new and different paths in which to stretch themselves. Some of the crusades have been platforms for being able to express something personal, and some have been tutorial in nature to break down the creative process and explain a technique. I am always thinking about what I can share that will be useful and interesting to the team players, and will encourage them to stay plugged in to their own growth and self-expression. The only role that serendipity plays in the development of each crusade is that I listen to the words that circle through my head, or show up in my current journal writings and think “hey, THAT should be the next one.”
What have you learned about yourself personally and professionally? What connections have you made? So much! Every day, every week, there is room for growth, and opportunity to learn about oneself. One of the most important lessons I have learned in the past few years is that it’s ok to say no, in both my personal and professional life. Being selfish with my time gives me the space to breath and lets me explore new directions without a deadline stifling my creativity. Don’t get me wrong, deadlines are good, even if self-imposed, because they enforce accountability and responsibility, but establishing gaps in your schedule is the only way to create without boundaries. I have always wanted to be individual in my style and my perspective and have found that blogging has given me a place to share that. I try to speak from the heart whether it’s about my own work or my observance of life. I often wonder if I’m connecting to my readers as the comments don’t always reflect the traffic, but all I have to do is remember 700 SOCKS arrived for my Pink Wink project and I know there are loyal followers out there who are listening in me. I appreciate this online venue where I have met friends and made acquaintances with people I may never have crossed paths with. Knowing there are souls around the globe that get you is very cool. On my blog I have shared specific things I’m into, like shapes, images, and color. I get email from readers who link me to something they know I’ll like and often I will get real mail filled with surprises that show me they are paying attention. I love that my interests have heightened their awareness as they see some of my favorite things show up in their world. My hope that by sharing ‘my things’ they figure out what ‘their things’ are and live with open eyes to see all the signs waiting for them.

Project: Serendipity Compass
The best way to increase serendipity in your life is to invite it in. Let's begin with a meditation from Michael Davis' book, "Rituals - Light for the Soul." (page 12)
Here is one of my favorite affirmations, "Trust. I trust my ideas and follow where it leads."
Let's begin our project!
Step 1: Prepare your journal page. This is a super easy way to banish the white page. No need to gesso and any type of paper will do. Take your favorite ink and rub it along the page. I like Tim Holz's distress inks. I selected the tattered rose for my background.
Step 2: Add some noise to the page by stamping an image of illegible text. Randomly stamp your entire page.
Step 3: In a darker color, stamp a shape randomly onto the page. I used my favorite foam stamp for the $1 bin at Michael's craft store.
Step 4: Cut out a piece of paper to use as the backing for your compass. I chose one of my green painted papers and distressed it by stamping the same foam stamp and walnut ink that I used for the background. Chestnut roan cat eye chalk ink was used to distress the outer edge. You can also use paper that already has a pattern printed on it.
Step 5: For the center I found an image of a compass on the internet and cut out the center. You may find a picture from a magazine of an interesting watch face.
Step 6: I altered a piece of purple mulberry paper by stenciling a star pattern first with gesso and then with purple acrylics.
Step 7: Some of my own painted papers were used for the heart and wings. I like to make color copies of my painted papers. At the center of my compass is my heart. I am guided by how my heart feels when faced with opportunities and challenges. The game spinners came from Tim Holz's Ideology findings collection.
Step 8: Brainstorm 12 images to place around the compass. Select images that remind you of times when you experienced serendipity or synchronicity. Cut them out and distress the edges using chalk inks or distress inks. Here is a closer look at some of the images that I chose.
You may have an image appear in your dream that holds special significance for you. Remember my dolphin story?
Are there any significant dates or lucky numbers? 10|10 is lucky for me but 10|10|10 is a super lucky number. What is your lucky number?
Are there places that are magical for you? I've had some amazing stories connected with trees. There are many sources online for free images. My friend Abbie has a delightful blog where you can find FREE Vintage images at The Vintage Moth.
Add some of your own artwork from another project. Pictured here is my nautius mandala. Scan or photograph your image and reduce it to fit in your compass.
Step 9: Add some directions on how to use your serendipity compass. When seeking direction ask yourself these questions:
North: What grounds you and keeps you on track? What prevents you from getting lost in life?
South: Where do you go and what do you do to get away from it all in order to recharge yourself?
East: What is on the horizon for you? What new areas are dawning in your life and in your future?
West: What is coming to an end in your life? What areas of your life do you feel the sun setting on?
I took a piece of my painted paper, tore the edges, distressed them using chalk inks. I used an ultra fine point Sharpie for the journaling.
Now any time I'm seeking direction I can turn to this page read the questions and remember the many times when my heart guided me.
Enter to Win a True North Arts Bag
I invite you to play with the serendipity and sychronicity theme. To enter the contest play with the theme in any way that suits your fancy and blog about it. Link back to www.TrueNorthArts.com and leave me a comment and you are entered into the contest. Feel free to use the graphic on the left in your post. {The paint is still drying on the bag. I'll get a photo posted soon!}
Here are some ideas to try:
1. Design a serendipity compass.
2. Design a compass and include the "seeking directions" reflection questions.
3. Write about a time when you experienced a happy accident or coincidence.
4. Open a random book to a random page and be open to the message. Design a journal page about what you discovered.
5. Take your camera and for the day follow the signs. Look for patterns be it words, colors, shapes, ideas. Post your pictures and your adventure.
Deadline: Entries are due by Friday, June 26th.
Gallery of entries will be posted on June 27th.
Winner announced on June 28th.

Wow, I've just finished reading this long post and I'm thinking that this month's play will be a great, wonderful travel deep inside. We are going to pay attention to our rotines in a new perspective. For me, it'll be a perfect period to do that, once it's my birthday next week. Usually, we stop by and think a bit in our lives in our birthday, don't we? I really like Michelle Ward's interview, I love her work and her crusades. Thank you for sharing so much with us.

OK. Now I haven't even read this post - but I had to come straight down here to comment right away when I saw the art header at the top of this post. This post on Serendipty and Synchronicity.
The art header at the top of the page says "Follow your heart" --- do you know what is the main focus of my map, that I just posted about (in more detail) tonight?? "Follow your Art" (in the shape of a heart)!
Sheez! Guess I better listen up. Serendipity and Sychronicity are HERE!

Oh my gosh! I'm so glad I came here... it was totally serendipitous! (You followed me on Twitter, so I had to come find out who you were - I'm so glad I did!)
I've had a lot of synchronicity in my life lately, and it all seems to be pointing in the same direction. One day this incredible idea for a dream project popped into my head as a fully formed thought. It was really amazing, because all of the signs I'd had the 2 weeks before hand were all building to this idea. And then when the idea showed up, several people gave me out-of-the-blue affirmation that it was the right idea even before I told them what I was thinking of doing!
If you read the post on my blog today, though, you'll see that, while everything feels SO right, there are still obstacles to me fully realizing the dream. Given the events of the last few weeks, though, I expect the way will be clear when it's meant to be.

Thanks for alerting me to come here.A very enjoyable read. There is so much here, you have done an amazing job with this and it is truly appreciated.I loved bumping into Michelle and her interview here.
From one who experiences serendipity many times a day, in both art and life in general, I found this post affirming.
Thanks for your major efforts in putting it all together.

Complete serendipity that I saw someone RT your Tweet today: "Today's Affirmation: I follow my bliss. I create to please *ME*"
Follow your bliss is my lifestyle, and I had just talked about a friend of mine about creating to please oneself, as opposed to the anxiety of creating commissions, and how I probably have to stop saying "yes" to them.
I have always had signs and coincidences all my life, for years they have grown, with practice and attention. But lately, in the last 4 months, the speed and intensity have heightened to a level that I can't even believe. I don't know what it all means, and it's scaring me b/c I don't know what it wants from me or how to proceed. And life keeps getting in the way of art, so much so that I'm stressed all over again and unable to follow these clues.
So...finding this very post at the top of your blog is another big one, and with that I go take a shower and see what the day has in store for me.
Thanks, looking forward to getting to exploring your ideas.

Amazing post, and the serendipity occurred just before I read your blog this morning. I came to yours from another True North member's blog who wrote about how remembering what her children meant to her saved her from the depths of depression, and that is exactly how I once felt as well -- and that they were my "true north" in my life's compass. She mentioned your new post about making a serendipity compass (which I hadn't seen yet) and I was off to check it out! Serendipity indeed!

I just finished everything and posted it to my blog at www.Quinceberry.blogspot.com Yay! I have two synchronicity stories that I'm so excited to tell (well, I have shared one of them already, but not the other) and my compass. I'm very glad you were delayed because this allowed me time to brainstorm and to actually participate. I loved this one -- it's just exactly what I'm about.
