Sand and Sea Sundays - Sand Sculptures

Posted here are a few photos of the sand sculptures that were on display at the 11th Annual Hampton Beach Master Sand Sculpting Competition. Here are a few facts that I learned about the competition.

• Only sand and water are the only materials used. A final coat of a bio-degradable material such as school glue and water is sprayed  over to seal it.
• Thin wires are placed at the tops of each sculpture to prevent birds from landing on the piece and causing damage.
• It is a times event and each competitor is given a total of 21 hours over 3 days to complete their sculpture.
• It is a solo event and no one is allowed in the plot other than the sculptor.
• Each competitor has 10 tons of sand.

Sand and Sea Sundays - Buoys and Mussels

This mermaid made it to the ocean this week and shot these buoys...

...and had a little play with them in Photoshop.

Then snacked on mussels that Georgia O'Keefe would have been tempted to paint...

Sand and Sea Sundays: Spanish Mermaid

I have a spare room that once was the space where Collage Diva created her magic. Times have changed. You see I've had a problem holding onto stuff that comes into the tree house. Everything has the potential for a collage or assemblage and well, the creative room is now dubbed the creative cave of chaos. While in the room of doom rummaging for something, I came across some of my earlier collage work and unearthed this mermaid. Isn't she lovely? She is so happy to make her debut here. Her body is from a silverware pattern. I love the background and the suggestion of a mammalian protuberance (Zappa fans will recognize the reference.)

I have this song on a number of recordings and I've always loved it without even knowing what he is singing. Today I bumped into this YouTube video and thought I would translate it. Bossa Nova is one of my very favorite styles of music. I often play it while doing the dishes and swinging my mermaid hips. Enjoy!
