This journal page is made up of many layers all pulled from my paper stash.
I started with a base layer of a paper where I did several rubbings. Pictured above shows the detail of an ornate frame that I rubbed. I used white crayon on white paper and then did a wash of watered down black acrylic paint. The repeating dots seen in the first picture was created by rubbing a large flat lego piece.
I then added a piece of black and white paper that has been sitting in my box of scraps waiting patiently to be used.
The next layer is a piece of paper I doodled on earlier in the week.
I thought the layout was going to be acromatic (no color) until I decided to add this element, a piece cut out from another collage. I didn't like the collage but loved this sweet spot.
As I look at this little spread I think I'll go back and add some journal writing to it. I'm saving that for another day. Quite likely, I'll paste on some more layers. I love the layered look.
Go rummage around your piles of papers and see what you can layer together.
Have fun!

Love this, Kathryn!! Layering is such fun! I've never thought to do rubbings - great technique & one I'll definitely be trying myself.

What a great spread. The mixing of color and black & white is inspired and the textures and layers on the right side are brilliant!

Kathryn, I had someone ask me this question once...."Why do you art journal?" Since then I've been curious to hear what others say about this. So why do you art journal? You might want to answer this in a posting as I'm sure many would be interested.
Enjoyed this post. Thanks for doing it.
Hugs from Ukraine,
